Birmingham has a thriving community theatre scene with auditions happening year-round. Whether you're preparing for your next audition, building foundational skills, or working on a self-tape for film, GPS has you covered.
With nine years of professional experience in Los Angeles — including training with top acting coaches and at Upright Citizens Brigade — plus a theater degree and grounding in classical technique (Stanislavsky, Meisner, Adler, Chubbuck), I focus on helping actors make bold choices, connect authentically to material, and develop their own instrument. Classical training builds a foundation that works on any stage and in front of any camera.
The work builds more than stage presence. It builds confidence, listening skills, and the ability to show up fully in any situation.

Audition prep for Birmingham's community theatre season, self-tape coaching for film and TV, monologue work, character development, or foundational technique. Working on a musical is different from prepping for a TV procedural — we'll focus on what your project actually needs.

Meet your coach
Matt Godfrey is an Odyssey and Earphones Award-winning, Audie-nominated audiobook narrator with over 300 titles to his credit, including works by Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, and Ray Bradbury. With a theater degree and nine years as a working actor — commercials for Old Navy, Chevy, Progresso, and Call of Duty; TV and film from Netflix and Roadside Attractions; theatre with Center Theatre Group and Red Mountain Theatre — he brings both classical training and real-world professional experience to his coaching.
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Matt works with clients in person and worldwide via Zoom, teaching the Prep + Presence approach that helps performers create work that's unmistakably human.
